Alien species Hemigrapsus takanoi was orginally only found in the Northwest Pacific regions, but by transport on ships - as larvae in ballastwater or on the hulls - they were introduced to Europe. The small crab was first recorded in Europe in March 1994 near La Rochelle, France. The first record in Belgium was 19 August 2003 in the port of Ostende. This species and the similar asian shore crab Hemirapsus sanguineus are now very common along the Belgian shore. They are both predators of invertebrates and feed on algae. [details]
